June 2026 — The world's biggest sporting event has arrived. The 2026 FIFA World Cup officially kicks off across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking the first time in history that three nations are co-hosting the tournament and the first World Cup to feature 48 national teams.

The expanded format represents the largest World Cup ever staged, with a record 104 matches played across 16 host cities from June 11 through July 19. FIFA hopes the new structure will increase global representation and provide more nations with the opportunity to compete on football's biggest stage.

A New Era for the World Cup

Under the new format, the 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-place finishers, advance to a newly introduced Round of 32 before progressing through the traditional knockout stages.

Defending champions Argentina return looking to retain their crown, while traditional powerhouses such as Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, and England are among the favorites to lift the trophy.
